To prepare for the role, Aaron Eckhart acquired a wheelchair, dressed accordingly, went to Venice Beach (California), and began shouting at beachgoers, portraying a mentally ill Vietnam War veteran (1955-1975). The next day, in the same guise, he sat in the doorway of what appeared to be an expensive private house. The homeowner, who soon appeared, was clearly frightened, but still asked Eckhart if he was alright. This display of compassion deeply touched the actor.
Filming took place in November 2013, but it was not released until December 2016.
Keira O'Donnell's character wears a t-shirt with the album cover of Nihility (2002) by the Polish death metal band Decapitated.
