Short description
Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful government minister, well-off and with a loving wife. All this is threatened when Mrs Cheveley appears in London with damning evidence of a past misdeed. Sir Robert turns for help to his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer and the despair of his father. Goring knows the lady of old, and, for him, takes the whole thing pretty seriously.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The flower that Arthur puts in his buttonhole is a reference to Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Wilde and his friends wore such flowers in their buttonholes as a sign of their homosexuality.
  • When the names of the arriving guests are announced at the beginning of the film, the name "Lord Windermere" is mentioned. This is a reference to Oscar Wilde's play "Lady Windermere's Fan" (1892).
  • Mabel mentions admiring a new painting in the gallery. This refers to the famous portrait of his mother by Anglo-American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903).
