Short description
Epic account of the thief Barabbas, who was pardoned for his crimes and spared crucifixion when Pilate offered the Israelites a choice to pardon Barabbas or Jesus. Struggling with his spirituality, Barabbas goes through many ordeals leading him to the gladiatorial arena, where he tries to win his freedom and confront his inner demons, ultimately becoming a follower of the man who was crucified in his place.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of the crucifixion scene, a solar eclipse actually occurred. This happened on February 15, 1961, and director Richard Fleischer (1916-2006) even delayed filming in order to capture this natural phenomenon.
  • When Anthony Quinn (1915-2001) was approached with an offer to star in the film, he was busy with a Broadway production of “Beckett,” playing King Henry II Plantagenet (1133-1189). Producer Dino De Laurentiis (1919-2010) was forced to buy out the actor’s Broadway contract in order for him to be released from his contractual obligations. Quinn himself very much wanted this, because he couldn’t stand his stage partner Laurence Olivier (1907-1989). After Quinn’s departure, Olivier, who had previously played the title role, took on Quinn’s former role.
  • During the scene of the burning of Rome, all the city sets were burned down. All of this had to be filmed in one take and in one night.
