The film is a remake of the eponymous 1986 film, starring Harvey Keitel.
The role of Brixos was written specifically for Dolph Lundgren.
Every day before filming, Dolph Lundgren spent two hours in the makeup room.
The film exists in two versions. A 'shortened' version lasting 112 minutes and softened to a PG13 rating was prepared for release in the USA, in addition to which there is a 200-minute television version, including a more extensive showing of the opening battle.
F. Murray Abraham had back problems during filming, and Dolph Lundgren's trainer, Brian Fitkin, came to his aid.
