The filmmakers wanted to joke about time travel and title the film "Hot Tub Time Machine 3," but the studio refused, stating that it would cause confusion.
The initial release date was set for late December 2014, however, after Sony moved the premiere of the film "The Interview" (2014) to that date, the premiere of "Hot Tub Time Machine 2" was postponed to 2015 to avoid competition.
The budget for the sequel was noticeably more modest than the budget for the first film (Steve Pink, 2010) due to the absence of John Cusack in the cast.
