The film is based on Audrey Niffenegger's novel "The Time Traveler's Wife" (2003).
Filming began in September 2007, with plans for the film to be released in the fall of 2008. However, the release was postponed without any official explanation from the studio.
The rights to the adaptation were purchased by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston even before the book was published.
In the early stages of the film's production, Adrian Brody was considered for the role of Henry, and Eva Green for the role of Claire.
Steven Spielberg, Gus Van Sant, and David Fincher were all offered the directing job for the film.
