Pierre Bergé, a friend and partner of Yves Saint Laurent, took a direct part in the preparation of the film. He provided 77 original outfits for the filming of the 1976 Opéra Ballets Russes collection show.
Principal photography began in June 2013.
Some scenes of Saint Laurent at work were filmed at the headquarters of the Berger empire on Marceau Avenue in Paris.
Berger's reaction to the film was as follows: 'There are moments I don't like, but that doesn't matter. You must perceive the film as it is, as a whole.'
