The film is based on Christopher Paolini's novel "Eragon" (2003).
Edward Speleers was the first among 180,000 applicants for the role of Eragon during a competition held at Eastbourne College.
Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart were offered the role of Brom, but their commitment to "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) prevented them from appearing in "Eragon".
These were the first roles in Joss Stone and Edward Speleers' lives.
Guy Pearce was a candidate for the role of Durza.
Elijah Wood and Shia LaBeouf were considered for the role of Eragon.
Christopher Paolini, the author of the original novel, expressed a desire to appear in the film in a cameo, specifically to play the role of a warrior beheaded during battle. However, it didn't work out – he was busy with his book's European tour.
Alex Pettyfer (Hammerhead) was offered the role of Eragon even before the casting that Speirs participated in. Pettyfer turned down the role because he was afraid of flying, and "Eragon" was filmed in Budapest.
