The film was shot in the office of director David Sandberg in Umeå, Sweden. Additional filming took place in Stockholm.
Since David Sandberg only had enough funds for one police uniform when making the trailer, he had to film each person separately for the scene in the police station.
David Sandberg spent $5,000 on creating the trailer.
The initial goal of the Kickstarter campaign in December 2013 was to raise $200,000 to shoot a 30-minute short film and release it online for free. David Sandberg set an additional goal – to raise $1,000,000 to make a feature-length film. The campaign ended on January 25, 2014, with 17,713 sponsors collectively donating $630,019.
Kung Fury wears Converse All Stars sneakers.
The actor who plays the slot machine at the beginning of the film wears Cazal 858 glasses. This model of glasses was first introduced in 1987, while the events of the film take place in 1985.
In the time travel scene, Hackerman uses a Power Glove controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) home gaming system, which was released in 1989, although the film is set in 1985.
