What's left behind the scenes

  • Residents of the area around Stockton, California, were recruited as extras. Sometimes director Robert Rossen (1908-1966) gave them lines and filmed their "rehearsals" for an effect of immediacy.
  • Robert Penn Warren's novel, on which this film is based, was published in 1946 and subsequently received the Pulitzer Prize. Robert Rossen himself bought the rights to adapt it, but later managed to strike a deal with Columbia Pictures. It was he who shifted the focus from Jack Burden, played by John Ireland (1914-1992), to Willie Stark, played by Broderick Crawford.
  • Preparing to play the role of Willie Stark, Broderick Crawford rewatched newsreels featuring Huey Long, a former senator from Louisiana and governor, whose life the film depicts.
  • Mercedes McCambridge (1916-2004) got the role after becoming angry with the producers for making her and other actresses called for auditions wait. McCambridge told them exactly what she thought and left in a rage. She subsequently received a call and was invited to play Sadie.
