What's left behind the scenes

  • The film marked director Edward Dmytryk’s return to Hollywood after being blacklisted and then serving a prison sentence for contempt of Congress, having refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. In April 1951, he ultimately testified, naming colleagues from left-wing organizations, after which he spent some time in England and only continued his career in the US thanks to an invitation from Stanley Kramer.
  • “The Sniper” initiated the collaboration between Kramer and Dmitrik, who together made four films, including the war drama “Iron Eight” (1952), the post-war drama “The Juggler” (1953), set in Israel, and the naval psychological drama “The Caine Mutiny” (1954).
  • The film was shot in a remarkably short time – 18 days – with a significant amount of footage shot on location, both in San Francisco and Long Beach.
