The film marked director Edward Dmytryk’s return to Hollywood after being blacklisted and then serving a prison sentence for contempt of Congress, having refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. In April 1951, he ultimately testified, naming colleagues from left-wing organizations, after which he spent some time in England and only continued his career in the US thanks to an invitation from Stanley Kramer.
“The Sniper” initiated the collaboration between Kramer and Dmitrik, who together made four films, including the war drama “Iron Eight” (1952), the post-war drama “The Juggler” (1953), set in Israel, and the naval psychological drama “The Caine Mutiny” (1954).
The film was shot in a remarkably short time – 18 days – with a significant amount of footage shot on location, both in San Francisco and Long Beach.
"The Sniper" marked the beginning of the collaboration between Kramer and Dmitrik, who together made four films, including the war drama "Iron Eights" (1952), the post-war drama "The Juggler" (1953), set in Israel, and the naval psychological drama "The Caine Mutiny" (1954).
