What's left behind the scenes

  • Richard Burton repeatedly played Shakespearean heroes, unlike Elizabeth Taylor, for whom the role of Katharine was her first. The actress was very nervous before filming began. She subsequently settled in and even asked director Franco Zeffirelli if some scenes could be reshot, which she now believed she would play better. Zeffirelli initially refused, but Taylor persisted, and on the last day of filming, all the material shot on the very first day was reshot.
  • Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011) and Richard Burton (1925-1984) served as producers. They invested $1 million of their own money into the film's production and waived their fees (which collectively exceeded $2 million) in exchange for a percentage of the box office revenue.
  • The dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor as Katharine when delivering the final monologue was created in the image and likeness of the dress of the heroine in Lorenzo Lotto's (1480-1556), a Venetian painter, painting "Lucretia".
