The voice on Adam's answering machine, informing Celeste that he is leaving her, belongs to Kevin Spacey.
Due to reshoots of some scenes in this film, Kevin Kline had to decline a role in Steven Spielberg's fantasy comedy 'Hook' (1991). That role was ultimately played by Robin Williams (1951-2014).
Burt Reynolds (1936-2018) turned down the lead role because he was married to Loni Anderson at the time, and she stated that if he took the part, the entire Hollywood would make fun of her (as Reynolds had previously had a widely publicized romance with Sally Field, who played the female lead).
The role of David Barnes, played by Robert Downey Jr., was originally written for a man aged 50, but director Michael Hoffman, with whom Downey Jr. had worked before, ordered the script to be rewritten and the character changed to match Downey Jr.'s age.
