• Michael Dudikoff categorically refused the offer to star in this film for a number of reasons: he no longer wanted to appear in martial arts films and did not want to fly to South Africa again, where Sam Firstenberg filmed "American Ninja 2: The Confrontation" in 1987. The fact was that the actor himself was a staunch opponent of the country's government, which pursued the policy of apartheid. He agreed to star in the fourth film of the "American Ninja" franchise only because the filming was supposed to take place in Lesotho.
• The role in the sequels was offered to Kurt McKinney, but upon learning that the filming would take place in South Africa, he refused, as he did not want to leave his young wife for a long time (he had recently married). The role went to David Bradley.
