During pre-production, Brian Cranston and Naomi Watts were considered for roles in the film.
Initially, it was announced that Errol Morris would direct the film, with John Lesher and Adam Kassen as producers. By 2015, these plans had fallen through, and a year later, Amazon Studios acquired the rights. Work on the film with a new cast and creative team began in 2022.
The film was initially planned to be titled “Holland, Michigan,” but was then shortened to simply “Holland.” The screenplay was written in 2013 and was originally set during that time, but director Mimi Cave preferred to shift the timeline to the year 2000. She felt that Dave’s growing alienation, played by Gael García Bernal, would resonate better with that period. Moreover, she had strong personal impressions associated with the early 2000s, which added authenticity to her storytelling in the film.
