What's left behind the scenes

  • Some scenes from the film were shot in Madison, Georgia. Chosen by vote as the "best small town in America," Madison is often used as a filming location.
  • The film is based on the eponymous series of books for teenagers in the "thriller/horror" genre.
  • The pseudonym "Mr. Shivers," under which Robert Lawrence Stine himself hides, was possibly taken from the title of M.D. Spencer's "Shiver" book series, which was inspired by the extremely popular "Goosebumps" series.
  • During the end credits of the film, one of the lawn gnomes can be heard laughing, while another shouts "Ahoy!" as the credits finish.
  • Stine searches for a secluded spot in the school to write his next book and discovers an empty auditorium where the school drama club is rehearsing a production of "The Shining" based on Stephen King's novel. The set depicts a hotel room. The set design contains references to jokes already made in the film, where Stine was compared to "Stephen King," as well as a nod to the author and the room number.
  • Hannah is a character from "The Ghost Next Door," one of the books in the "Goosebumps" series. The plot of the book revolves around Hannah's suspicions that their neighbor is a ghost, when in fact Hannah and her family are the ghosts.
  • In the film, Robert Lawrence Stine types his books on a typewriter, and they come to life. At the end of the film, Zach has to finish typing so that the fictional story becomes reality. This is similar to the plot of one of Stine's books, "The Beast," where the main character, Zeke, owns a typewriter that materializes the stories typed on it into life.
  • When the gnomes tie up Mr. Stein, played by Jack Black, and are about to put him in the oven, this is a so-called "Easter egg." This scene repeats an episode from the film "Gulliver's Travels," which also starred Jack Black.
  • At the end of the first seminar, Jack Black, in the role of R.L. Stine, encounters another teacher who greets him with "Good afternoon, Mr. Stein," to which Black replies, "Hello, Mr. Black." He then tells Zach that Mr. Black is the new head of the drama club. This is a reference to the film "School of Rock" (2003), which also starred Jack Black. In "Goosebumps," Mr. Black is played by R.L. Stine himself.
  • When Stine is chased by a giant praying mantis, the car's high beams constantly turn on and off.
  • The children in the Ferris wheel cabins would inevitably have been injured when it broke loose and started rolling. Moreover, the sudden stop when the wheel finally got stuck in the trees would have thrown the children out of the cabins, as there were no seatbelts.
