Short description
A man named Seligman finds a fainted wounded woman in an alley and he brings her home. She tells him that her name is Joe and that she is nymphomaniac. Joe tells her life and sexual experiences with hundreds of men since she was a young teenager while Seligman tells about his hobbies, such as fly fishing, reading about Fibonacci numbers or listening to organ music.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Nicole Kidman was supposed to play the role of Mrs. H, but she dropped out of the project due to a scheduling conflict.
  • Shia LaBeouf confirmed in an interview with MTV News that he will be participating in unsimulated sexual intercourse in the film.
  • "Nymphomaniac" is the final part of the "Depression Trilogy," which also includes the films "Antichrist" (2009) and "Melancholia" (2011).
  • Liam Hemsworth turned down the role of Jerome.
  • To get the role in the film, Shia LaBeouf was asked to send a photograph of his penis. He subsequently decided to send personal recordings of intimate scenes with his girlfriend to convince Lars von Trier to cast him.
  • Principal photography took place between August 28 and November 9, 2012, in Cologne and Hilden, Germany, and in Belgium.
  • A complete five-hour version of the film was released in Denmark.
  • The plot is set in England, but Joe's apartment has European electrical outlets on the walls. The same outlets can be seen in the hospital room where she goes to visit her father.
  • In a German train, where two girls pick up strangers, the conductor wears a uniform from British Railways of the 1970s.
  • “Nymphomaniac” is the final part of the “Depression Trilogy,” which also includes the films “Antichrist” (2009) and “Melancholia” (2011).
