What's left behind the scenes

  • On the first day of filming, the set was blessed by a specially invited priest.
  • James Wan was offered a "mind-blowing" sum for filming "The Fate of the Furious" (2017), but he preferred to work on "The Conjuring 2." As he himself wrote on Instagram: "It would have been a sin to miss the opportunity to shoot another horror film."
  • The first "The Conjuring" film (2013) was aiming for a PG-13 rating, although its creators did not object when it was given an R rating. "The Conjuring 2" (2016) was filmed with an R rating in mind from the start, and that is the rating it received.
  • The film grossed more in its opening weekend than any other horror film in 3 years. Before that, the record was held by the prequel "The Conjuring" (2013).
  • The film is based on investigations of the Enfield poltergeist, conducted by Ed and Lorraine Warren. However, the filmmakers took many liberties with the actual events, particularly exaggerating the roles of the Warrens. The poltergeist cases in Enfield, a district in north London, attracted many researchers. The investigation conducted by Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair is told in Christopher Nuyholm's film "The Enfield Haunting" (2015).
  • Madison Wolfe and Patrick Wilson had worked together before. When the actors cast in "The Conjuring 2" met for a script read-through, Wilson didn't recognize the actress because she now had a British accent.
  • Patrick Wilson sings himself in the film.
  • During the film's promotional campaign in June 2016, Vera Farmiga had swollen lymph nodes. Problems with them began during filming, when due to equipment malfunctions, the actress had to do up to 50 takes of a scene where she had to scream in horror.
  • The events of the film take place six years after the events depicted in "The Conjuring".
  • In the Indian city of Tiruvannamalai, a 65-year-old man died while watching the film on the evening of June 16, 2016. The Times of India reported this on June 17. During the film's climax, the man began complaining of heart pain and then lost consciousness. Doctors at the hospital pronounced him dead.
  • The Hodgsons, whose home in Enfield was the site of the poltergeist activity, once visited the set. Frances O'Connor, who played the mother in the film, refused to meet them, fearing that meeting the real-life prototypes of the characters would affect her perception of their roles.
  • In the opening scene of the film, where the Warrens participate in a seance in Amityville, Lorraine is dressed in a cloak and trousers. This is exactly what the real Lorraine Warren wore when she and her husband investigated the Amityville case in 1976. The costume designer found an exact replica of the heroine's cloak for the actress playing Lorraine.
  • The name of the demon Valak can be seen six times in the Warrens' house. First, in the scene at the table, where Lorraine first sees Edward's painting – the word “Valak” is visible on the items displayed on the window and behind Lorraine (V is highlighted in the word “love,” and the remaining letters are stylized to look like wood). In the scene where Lorraine and her daughter pass by the demon in the form of a nun, the letters “V,” “A,” “L,” “A,” and “K” can be discerned. Then, when the daughter makes bracelets, and each of the three is inscribed with “Valak.” And finally – when Lorraine sleeps while her daughter plays, the word “Valak” appears on the bookshelf.
  • The scene in which Frances O'Connor's character wakes up to the screams of children, and drawers in the room begin to slide open and slam shut, was filmed in one take.
  • The demon appearing as a nun in the opening scene of the film has nothing to do with the Amityville investigation. As director James Wan explained: “It’s Lorraine’s premonition of what awaits them in London.”
  • All scenes with the demon in the guise of a nun were added after principal photography had finished. Director James Wan wanted to develop the storyline of doubts plaguing Lorraine, so he decided to give the demonic entity the appearance of a nun.
  • The scene in which Francis O'Connor's character wakes up to the screams of children and drawers in the room begin to slide open and slam shut was filmed in one take.

  • In 2017, Judith Penney accused Ed Warren of having a sexual relationship with her when he was 27 years old and she was 15. According to the woman, Lorraine Warren allegedly forced her to have an abortion to keep the relationship secret and protect the reputation of the well-known family. Judith also stated that the relationship lasted for 40 years. Lorraine and her close associates denied the accusations.
