• Ben Affleck decided to postpone this project in order to play the lead role for David Fincher in "Gone Girl" (2014). According to Affleck, he had always been looking for opportunities to work with this director.
• Cinematographer Robert Richardson intended to shoot the film using anamorphic lenses in Ultra Panavision 70 format, as he did with "The Hateful Eight" (2015), however, Panavision had already leased them for the filming of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016).
• Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the lead role of Joe Coughlin, but the actor decided to limit himself to a producer role.
• Ben Affleck's fourth film as director.
• This is the second time Ben Affleck has directed a film adaptation of a novel by Dennis Lehane, since the release of 'Gone Baby Gone' (2007).
• Initially, the novel's author, Lehane, was concerned that Ben Affleck was not suitable for the role of Joe Coughlin, believing that an actor with such on-screen charisma would struggle to convey the protagonist's underlying treachery and shame. However, to his credit, Affleck did not deem it beneath him to audition for the role, apparently dispelling all the author's fears.
