• To prevent information leaks during filming, the project was codenamed "Mineral".
• Shailene Woodley refused to wear a wig in "Insurgent." She simply cut her hair short. In the book, her character, Tris, also cuts her hair, but not as short as it is shown in the film.
• Neil Burger was originally supposed to direct this film, but he turned it down due to scheduling conflicts with "Insurgent" and "Divergent" (2014).
• The character of Edward (Ben Lamb) was supposed to remain in the film, but the actor left the project. As a result, Johnny Weston was cast in the role, and the character was renamed Edgar.
• Naomi Watts is naturally blonde. For her role in this film, she dyed her hair auburn.
• Unlike the first film, "Divergent, Chapter 2: Insurgent" (2015) was filmed in Atlanta, not Chicago.
• The cube shown in the trailer was not in the book.
• Kate Winslet was so eager to reprise her role in Neil Burger's 2014 science fiction film that she instructed her representatives to contact the producers and inform them that she had a window in her filming schedule and was ready to play Janine again.
• As with many other adaptations of young adult literature (such as the Harry Potter books and the Hunger Games and Twilight franchises), the final book in the series (Allegiant) was planned to be split into two films, with this film covering the events of the first half of the book and Ascendant covering the events of the second half. Due to overwhelmingly negative reviews of the film and unsatisfactory box office returns, these plans were abandoned, as were plans to film a continuation as a television series.
• The massive structure behind the wall is the 'Duga', or '5H32' (a Soviet over-the-horizon radar station of the early warning system for launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles). It is located near the city of Pripyat in Ukraine. The station was operational between July 1976 and December 1989.
