What's left behind the scenes
- The novel by Glendon Swarthout (1918-1992) on which this film is based was published in 1988. Paul Newman (1925-2008) owned the film rights and initially wanted to direct the film himself, but abandoned the idea after several unsuccessful attempts.
- Composer Marco Beltrami built an aeolian harp with his own hands, which he used in the film's musical score.
- All the scenes with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones were filmed in just one day.
