What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene where a cow is killed with a spear, the animal was not harmed. It was sedated under the supervision of a veterinarian, and the spear was added to the footage using computer technology.
- The first film directed by a Mauritanian filmmaker in Mauritania to win France's national film award, the César. The film was nominated for 8 awards and won 7 – Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Music, and Best Sound. Thus, 'Timbuktu' became the absolute record holder in African cinema for the number of awards.
