Short description
In underworld terms, Chas Devlin is a 'performer,' a gangster with a talent for violence and intimidation. Turner is a reclusive rock superstar. When Chas and Turner meet, their worlds collide—and the impact is both exotic and explosive.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During a test screening in Santa Monica, the wife of one of Warner Brothers' executive producers vomited. She and the other viewers were offered financial compensation for emotional distress.
  • Some of the erotic scenes in the film were so explicit that the developing lab suggested the filmmakers, instead of wasting money and time on development, use a hammer and chisel to destroy the footage in its infancy – it wouldn’t see the screen anyway.
  • To prepare for his role, Donald Camell arranged for James Fox to spend time with real gangsters from East London.
  • The film was re-edited three times after the test screening.
  • The filmmakers were inspired by the work of Jorge Luis Borges.
  • The sex scenes between Anita Pallenberg and Mick Jagger deeply upset the Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards, who was her lover at the time. He hid behind the sets and gnashed his teeth with anger. He was so angry that he refused to record the song 'Memo from Turner' for the film – he was replaced in the band by Ry Cooder.
  • The original title of the film was 'The Liars,' which then became 'The Performers,' and only then acquired its final form.
