What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Richard Hough's novel "Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian".
  • Later in Bligh's career, there were many subsequent mutinies and complaints about his "repressive command." His tyrannical character later provoked the "Rum Rebellion" in New South Wales in 1808, leading to his forcible deportation.
  • The ship "Bounty," recreated specifically for the film, was used as a tourist cruise ship in Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia for many years until 2007, after which it was sold to HKR International Limited.
  • Michael Cimino was offered to direct this project, but he declined.
  • Christopher Reeve turned down the role of Fletcher Christian.
  • The hull of the HMS Bounty, built for this film, is made of steel and only clad in wood. However, the HMS Bounty reproduced for the film 'Mutiny on the Bounty' (1962) was built of wood, in the traditional manner.
  • The film was originally planned to be made in 1975, when Anthony Hopkins would have been closer in age to the real William Bligh.
  • This film is generally considered to be the most accurate depiction of the actual mutiny on the Bounty.
  • There are persistent, but unsubstantiated rumors that the real Fletcher Christian did not die on Pitcairn Island, but returned to England. Some of his relatives later swore they saw him, and that he lived out his life in hiding.
