Short description
James Parker and Harry Holt are on an expedition in Africa in search of the elephant burial grounds that will provide enough ivory to make them rich. Parker's beautiful daughter Jane arrives unexpectedly to join them. Jane is terrified when Tarzan and his ape friends abduct her, but when she returns to her father's expedition she has second thoughts about leaving Tarzan.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film ranks 35th in attendance among foreign films in Soviet cinema distribution.
  • According to Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984), he initially auditioned for the role of Tarzan in order to meet Clark Gable (1901-1960), with whom he had a friendly relationship. Weissmuller ran, jumped, and swung on vines, after which he was offered the role, and also advised to take a pseudonym, which Weissmuller flatly refused. The studio official who suggested he take a pseudonym had never heard of Weissmuller. Only later did another studio employee inform the official that this was, in fact, a swimming champion and Olympic medalist.
  • At one time, Clark Gable was considered for the role of Tarzan, but ultimately it was decided not to cast an unknown actor as the ape-man.
  • During the first encounter with Jane, Tarzan fights and kills a leopard. In reality, it was not a leopard, but a jaguar. The jaguar was likely used because it was much cheaper to bring a jaguar from Mexico than to import a real leopard from Africa.
