The film was shot in 11 days.
The film was long considered lost. The reels with the footage, containing all of its parts, were only found in the 1960s.
The film's success was largely due to its innovative advertising campaign. The premiere screenings took place in New York at the Rivoli Theater. During these days, a huge crowd of onlookers gathered in front of the theater, watching nine women in zombie costumes and makeup walk listlessly along a wooden boardwalk under an awning. Meanwhile, sounds from the film were broadcast through a loudspeaker: the beat of tom-toms, the noise of work on sugarcane plantations, and the singing of cicadas.
