What's left behind the scenes

  • It is commonly believed that a large part of this film is improvised, but this is not entirely true. Director Jacques Rivette, having developed the film's structure, did not allow the actors to improvise, but instead involved them in working on the screenplay. The only scene built on improvisation is the one where Celine boasts to her friends about her wealthy American friend. All other scenes were filmed strictly according to the text written by Rivette in collaboration with the lead actresses. The actresses themselves wrote their lines, while Rivette outlined the connections between the characters and scenes.
