What's left behind the scenes

  • This is the first film after "No Country for Old Men" (2010) that cinematographer Roger Deakins shot for directors Joel and Ethan Coen on 35mm film. After that film, Deakins switched to digital and shot the next five films on the "Arri Alexa" camera. For "Hail, Caesar!", he returned to working with film because the Coens dislike the digital image. Additionally, they felt it would be more appropriate to shoot a film about 1950s Hollywood on film.
  • This is the eighth collaboration between actress Frances McDormand and Joel and Ethan Coen. Frances is married to Joel Coen.
  • The film's cast includes four Academy Award winners (George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Fisher Stevens) and three nominees (Josh Brolin, Jonah Hill, and Ralph Fiennes).
  • This is the fourth joint project for George Clooney and Joel and Ethan Coen. Prior to "Hail, Caesar!" there was "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000), "The Ladykillers" (2003), and "Burn After Reading" (2008).
  • The fictional film studio "Capitol Pictures" previously appeared in "Barton Fink" (1991), another film by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen set in Los Angeles.
  • John Hill’s character said in "Superbad" (2007) that he wouldn't mind if his favorite directors, the Coens, shot pornography, which he prefers. Now John Hill himself has starred in a film by the Coen brothers for the first time.
  • The cast and crew of James Franco’s project "The Deuce" constantly had to pause and vacate "Lot Studios" in Hollywood for filming of "Hail, Caesar!"
  • This is the third joint work of actors Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes. They have previously starred together in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) and "A Bigger Splash" (2015).
  • This is the third film by Joel and Ethan Coen to feature Josh Brolin. The first two were "No Country for Old Men" (2007) and "True Grit" (2010).
  • Bob Hoskins played the role of Eddie Mannix in "Superman Returns" (2006). Mannix’s wife, Toni, was played by Diane Lane. Lane was married to Josh Brolin and Christopher Lambert, actors who starred in "Hail, Caesar!"
  • This is the second joint work of actors Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown. Their first joint film was "Highlander" (1986).
  • Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton and Fisher Stevens starred in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014).
  • This is the third film in which George Clooney and Tilda Swinton have appeared together. The first two were "Michael Clayton" (2007) and "Burn After Reading" (2008).
  • Josh Brolin and Christopher Lambert starred together in "Road Flower" (1993). After completing work on the film, Lambert divorced Diane Lane, who married Brolin in 2004. Lane and Brolin divorced before the start of filming on "Hail, Caesar!"
  • Scarlett Johansson plays an actress who becomes pregnant just before the start of filming. The same thing happened to Johansson in real life. She found out she was pregnant a couple of weeks before the start of filming on "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015).
