The film is based on the novel by writer Irina Nemirovskaya.
The novel "French Suite" was unknown for over sixty years, as the writer was arrested in 1942 and sent to Auschwitz, from which she never returned. The manuscript was found by the writer's daughters among her belongings. The novel was published only in 2004.
