A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Greek writer Vasilis Vasilikos.
Both the novel and the film depicted real events that took place in Greece in the 1960s. On May 22, 1963, at an anti-war rally in Thessaloniki, Grigoris Lambrakis, a member of parliament for the Unified Democratic Left party, was fatally wounded by two far-right extremists traveling in a three-wheeled vehicle, and died in hospital five days later.
The film's music was composed by Mikis Theodorakis, a friend and comrade of the murdered MP Lambrakis, who secretly sent it from Greece. Theodorakis himself became a victim of political repression under the authoritarian regime. In addition, the film features the melody “Psyché Rock” by electronic music composer Pierre Henry.
