What's left behind the scenes

  • To star in this film, Peter Weller turned down a role in 'RoboCop 3'.
  • The shooting of the writer’s wife was not a random plot twist. The author of the book on which this film is based, William S. Burroughs (1915-1997), accidentally shot his own wife, Joan, in Mexico during a party in 1951, when he announced that he would shoot a pistol “in the style of William Tell” (she had placed a glass of liquor on her head, he shot, but missed and killed her). Under Mexican law at the time, Burroughs served 13 days in a local jail.
  • This film was initially intended to be the first by David Cronenberg not filmed in Toronto, but the authorities of the province of Ontario offered him attractive financial terms; moreover, the Iraqi army's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 put an end to plans to film in Morocco, so filming took place in Toronto.
  • Seven hundred tons of sand were brought into the building of a former ammunition factory to film the desert scenes.
  • To star in this film, Peter Weller turned down a role in "RoboCop 3".
