Short description
When Eastern European criminals Oleg and Emil come to New York City to pick up their share of a heist score, Oleg steals a video camera and starts filming their activities, both legal and illegal. When they learn how the American media circus can make a remorseless killer look like the victim and make them rich, they target media-savvy NYPD Homicide Detective Eddie Flemming and media-naive FDNY Fire Marshal Jordy Warsaw, the cops investigating their murder and torching of their former criminal partner, filming everything to sell to the local tabloid TV show "Top Story."

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the bathroom, Robert De Niro's character lowers his head into a sink filled with ice. Police officers actually do this when they need to sober up from a hangover. De Niro learned this while researching for the role and convinced the filmmakers to include this moment in the plot.
  • Charlize Theron appeared in the film without a fee. This was a gesture of gratitude from the actress to director John Herzfeld for the recognition she received after participating in his thriller "Two Days in the Valley" (1996).
  • Irish artist Graham Knuttel was paid £50,000 for the canvas that is destroyed in the film.
  • The film's title is a reference to the famous phrase by Andy Warhol (1928-1987): "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."
