The film ends with a dedication: "My friend, Charles Bukowski. I miss you, S.P." Sean Penn was a close friend of the writer and poet.
When Freddy gives John three more days, he casually marks it in the calendar with red ink. Later, when he crosses out that day in the calendar, it is visible that it was outlined with a perfect square.
When Jo-Jo dances in front of John, he gets up and turns off the reel-to-reel player. A minute later, he turns it on again, but the song starts playing from the same point it did in the previous scene, even though no one rewound the tape.
When Peter asks John a question about prison, his (Peter's) hair changes position after a cut.
The calendar on Freddy's wall shows that January 1st is a Monday. However, this is impossible considering that the events in the film take place 5-6 years after Emily's death in 1988 (John Booth was in prison for 5 years). January 1st does not fall on a Monday in 1993, 1994, or 1995.
