What's left behind the scenes

  • More than half the budget was spent recreating the celebratory fireworks display for the bicentennial of the French Revolution on July 14, 1989.
  • Initially, director Leos Carax received official permission to film on the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris (the oldest surviving bridge there across the Seine, built in the 16th-17th centuries). However, the permit expired before filming even began, so the bridge had to be built from scratch on a lake near Montpellier. The construction of a replica of the Pont Neuf and the facades of the surrounding buildings made this film one of the most expensive in the history of French cinema.
