Screenwriters Steven Kampmann and William Porter disliked the film so much that they demanded their pseudonyms be used in the credits and in the film's promotional campaign.
Martin Short, who played the 10-year-old Clifford, was 40 years old during filming.

Before its theatrical release in 1994, the film was re-edited and included some newly shot scenes, including scenes with Martin Short as an elderly Clifford, who tries to convince a student played by Ben Savage not to run away by telling him about his own childhood. These scenes were filmed approximately in 1993, three years after principal photography had ended.
