What's left behind the scenes

  • The scenes in the desert were filmed in the same locations as those from the film "Mad Max" (1979).
  • The spaceship is called Hunter/Gratzner—the same name as the special effects company that designed and built the model.
  • The contact lenses Vin Diesel wore during filming were non-corrective. They couldn't be removed after the first day of shooting. As a result, an optician had to be sent for from the nearest town, which was three hours away from the shooting location.
  • The film was shot entirely in Australia.
  • A sequel titled "The Chronicles of Riddick" (2004) was also directed by David Twohy. In the same year, a short anime film, "The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury" (2004), was released. "Dark Fury" served as a bridge between "Pitch Black" and "The Chronicles of Riddick."
  • An editor's cut of the film released a year later was 3 minutes longer than the original.
  • In the original script, Riddick was a woman.
  • Street filming took place at temperatures below 10 degrees, so the actors warmed themselves near the lighting lamps during breaks between takes.
  • Filming of the movie took 60 days.
  • The primary sample that Carolyn Fry investigates is: 76875/87/656.
  • When Riddick pulled the waterproof tarpaulin from one of the buildings, revealing Jack, Vin Diesel strained a muscle due to the rope tied on the other side.
  • The weapon used by Jones is an Armscor M30R6 shotgun, modified to appear futuristic.
  • One of the episodes shows cargo bays being ejected overboard before the crash; one of the bays is numbered '2E', a reference to director David Twohy's name by the special effects team.
  • Initially, Richard Riddick was supposed to die in the film's finale, but it was then decided to 'kill off' Carolyn Fry in order to allow for a sequel. The creators doubted that Carolyn's character would be as appealing as Riddick's.
  • When Carolin sees Jones injecting drugs into his eye, she refers to it as "hype." This slang term was also used in the 1940s in relation to drug users (primarily heroin addicts).
  • The scene where Jones injects drugs into his eye was Cole Hauser's idea.
