Initially, the screenplay for the film was to be written by Academy Award winner for “A Beautiful Mind” Akiva Goldsman.
Producer Vin Diesel, wanting to cast Judi Dench in the role of Ereon, filled her dressing room with flowers and constantly insisted that filming would not begin until Judi gave her consent.
The martial art style used by Riddick resembles “Kali,” characterized by straight, powerful strikes with frequent use of sticks.
The film was shot in the cities of Burnaby and Vancouver (Canada, British Columbia).
Working titles for the film were “Riddick”, “Pitch Black 2: The Chronicles of Riddick”, and “Pitch Black 2”.
Filming began on June 9, 2003, in Vancouver and wrapped up at the end of October of the same year.
The official contract with Vin Diesel was signed in September 2001.
In the scene where Riddick is lowered into the prison on the planet Crematoria, the display on the cart showing the distance is entirely in Russian.
