What's left behind the scenes

  • A tragedy occurred during the filming of a rather simple scene involving special effects (the destruction of a gun turret). The first take by director David Lean (1908-1991) was unsatisfactory, and for some reason, the second director and leading man Noël Coward (1899-1973) was not on set. Electrician Jock Daymore wanted to shoot the scene before lunch, so he climbed onto the set with pyrotechnic composition in his hand. The turret was still hot from the first take, and an explosion occurred, killing Daymore and seriously injuring two others present.
  • Approximately three weeks after filming began, Noël Coward suddenly realized that A) David Lean knew much more about directing than he did, and B) he didn't want to direct at all. After that, he practically relinquished directorial duties to Lean.
