What's left behind the scenes

  • The screenplay, adapted from Michael Punke's 2003 novel of the same name, was written by Iñárritu and Mark L. Smith, and is partly based on the life of frontiersman Hugh Glass.
  • Tom Hardy claims he never reads screenplays. When preparing to film 'Splinter Cell,' based on the stealth-action video game series created by Tom Clancy, Leonardo DiCaprio persuaded him to read the screenplay for 'The Revenant.' Hardy read half the script and agreed to participate in the filming.
  • The filmmakers allocated 9 months for filming, although the actual shooting took only 80 days. The unusual length of filming was due to weather conditions, the remoteness of the locations, and the desire of director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki to shoot only in natural light to achieve maximum realism. Only a few hours were spent filming each day, so each shooting day had to be planned in advance.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio was offered the role in 'Steve Jobs' (2015), but he chose to play the lead role in 'The Revenant.'
  • Filming in Canada fell behind schedule and the snow melted. The film crew had to move south to Argentina, where there was still snow at that time.
  • Sean Penn was initially chosen for the role of John Fitzgerald, but he had to decline due to his commitment to another project. As a result, the role of Fitzgerald went to Tom Hardy.
  • As in the film *Inception* (2010), *The Revenant* starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, and Lukas Haas.
  • *The Revenant* was the first narrative feature film shot on the new 6.5k ARRI 65 camera.
  • In 1971, the film *Jeremiah Johnson* was released, its plotline of which somewhat resembles the story of Hugh Glass, although the characters were presented under different names. *Jeremiah Johnson* starred Richard Harris and John Huston.
  • Work on the project was halted until 2010, when Mark L. Smith adapted Punke's book for Steve Golin's *Anonymous Content*. In May 2010, Mark L. Smith stated that John Hillcoat would direct the film and that negotiations were underway with Christian Bale for the lead role. Hillcoat left the project in October of the same year. Jean-François Richet was considered as a director, but a contract was eventually signed with Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
  • The project for "The Revenant" was launched in August 2001, when producer Akiva Goldsman acquired the rights to adapt Michael Punke's yet-unpublished book, "The Revenant." The first draft of the future film's screenplay was written by David Rabe.
  • Initially, Park Chan-wook was involved in the production and envisioned Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role. However, Park later left the project.
  • The film "The Revenant" marked composer Ryuichi Sakamoto's return to Western cinema. Sakamoto wrote the soundtrack for Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor" (1987), which won Academy, Golden Globe, and Grammy Awards. Sakamoto’s last project in Hollywood before "The Revenant" was Brian De Palma’s "Snake Eyes" (1998).
  • Joshua Berger, who played Short-Tail Bill, had never appeared in a live-action film before 2010. It is believed that someone saw his audition with director Joel Potrykus. The actor was contacted and asked to provide an audition tape. Shortly thereafter, Joshua Berger flew to Canada to film "The Revenant."
  • This is the third film in which Jacob Tomuri performed stunts for Tom Hardy. They had previously worked together on "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) and "Legend" (2015).
  • This is Leonardo DiCaprio's first role in two years since the release of "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2013).
  • "New Regency Pictures" was left without a partner and funding when they began to doubt the feasibility of their participation in the project. This led to a two-month delay in production. Progress was only made when "Annapurna Pictures" with Megan Ellison decided to act as a financial partner to "New Regency Pictures".
  • The trailer for the film was released on July 17, 2015. It garnered over 7 million views in less than 36 hours.
  • Paul Anderson and Tom Hardy reunited on the set of "The Revenant," having previously worked together on the British television series "Peaky Blinders" (2013).
  • Vegetarian Leonardo DiCaprio became so immersed in the role that in the scene where his character Hugh Glass eats bison liver, he actually ate raw meat.
  • The film is based on real events from 1823 and tells the story of Hugh Glass, who was mauled by a bear and abandoned by his companions to die, believing his end was inevitable.
  • The role of Jim Bridger was played by Will Poulter. Brad Pitt's character, Lieutenant Aldo Raine in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" (2009), referred to himself as a "direct descendant of the hunter Jim Bridger".
  • According to Leonardo DiCaprio, the lead actor, this was the most challenging role of his career. The actor had to learn to shoot a musket, start a fire, speak two Native American languages (Pawnee and Arikara), and work with a doctor specializing in ancient healing practices.
  • One of the two stunt performers portraying the grizzly bear was Glenn Ennis (6'3" tall).
  • Production designer Jack Fisk wanted the fort to appear dilapidated and worn. Tree trunks felled with the approval of the Canadian Parks and Wildlife Service were used to build the structures comprising the set. When they arrived in Calgary, Fisk found the trunks too fresh, so he ordered them to be “aged” – repeatedly lifted into the air with a forklift and dropped to the ground – until they inevitably lost their “marketable appearance,” at which point the crew began constructing the sets from them.
  • In one of the scenes of the bear attack episode, Leonardo DiCaprio was jerked around in different directions using ropes attached to his body.
  • To film the avalanche scene in the Canadian province of Alberta, explosives were dropped onto the mountaintop by helicopter, and filming was done from a crane. All of this had to be shot in one take.
  • Tom Hardy claims he never reads scripts. When preparing to film "Splinter Cell," based on the stealth-action video game series created by Tom Clancy, Leonardo DiCaprio convinced him to read the script for "The Revenant." Hardy read half the script and agreed to participate in the filming.
  • Work on the project was halted until 2010, when Mark L. Smith adapted Pankey’s book for Steve Golin’s Anonymous Content. In May 2010, Mark L. Smith stated that John Hillcoat would direct the film and that negotiations were underway with Christian Bale for the lead role. Hillcoat left the project in October of the same year. Jean-François Richet was considered as a director, but a contract was ultimately signed with Alejandro González Iñárritu.
  • Joshua Burdge, who played Shorty Bill, had never appeared in a feature film before 2010. It is believed that someone saw his audition tape with director Joel Potrykus. The actor was contacted and asked to provide a demo reel. Shortly thereafter, Joshua Burdge flew to Canada to film "The Revenant."
  • New Regency Pictures was left without a partner and funding when they began to doubt the advisability of their participation in the project. As a result, the film’s production had to be postponed for 2 months. Progress was made only when Annapurna Pictures, led by Megan Ellison, decided to act as a financial partner to New Regency Pictures.
