- The filmmakers were directly influenced by the desperate brutality during the actual battle in Alcatraz Prison on May 2-4, 1946, when prisoners fought a hopeless two-day battle, refusing to surrender after a failed escape attempt.
- The scenes of violence shown on screen literally shocked audiences in 1947.
- The girl on the calendar page is the quintessence of all the film's female characters and combines the traits of each of them. The original drawing, which served as a prop, was sold at auction for $2,500.
