Short description

Timeworn Joe Collins and his fellow inmates live under the heavy thumb of the sadistic, power-tripping guard Captain Munsey. Only Collins' dreams of escape keep him going, but how can he possibly bust out of Munsey's chains?

The filmmakers were directly influenced by the desperate brutality during the actual battle in Alcatraz Prison on May 2-4, 1946, when prisoners fought a hopeless two-day battle, refusing to surrender after a failed escape attempt.
The scenes of violence shown on screen literally shocked audiences in 1947.
The girl on the calendar page is the quintessence of all the film's female characters and combines the traits of each of them. The original drawing, which served as a prop, was sold at auction for $2,500.
