What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took 40 days.
  • The film is set in France, but it was shot in London.
  • The character of Madame Lenotre, played by Helen McCrory, actually existed, while Sabine de Barra, played by Kate Winslet, is a fictional character. Director Alan Rickman once admitted that he really liked the idea of "inserting a fictional character right into the midst of real historical figures."
  • Alan Rickman's last directorial work (1946-2016).
  • In France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, the film was released under the title "Royal Gardens."
  • Kate Winslet herself performed the scene where her character falls into the water. The actress was pregnant at the time, but kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone, reasonably assuming that otherwise the filmmakers would use a stunt double.
  • The King tells Madame de Barra that the woman he dreams of marrying is very devout, although not of royal blood and not even an aristocrat. Madame de Maintenon, the King's second wife, whom he secretly married on the advice of Madame de Barra, fits the description.
