What's left behind the scenes

  • The fifth film in the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • Early in the project's development, rumors circulated that, like the film "Thor" (2011), "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) would be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Producer Kevin Feige consistently denied these rumors.
  • Jamie Alexander stated in an interview that she would not appear in the film as Sif due to her commitment to filming the television series "Blindspot" (2015).
  • This is Mark Ruffalo's third portrayal of Bruce Banner/Hulk in a feature film. Ruffalo is the only actor to have played the role this many times. Furthermore, his contract with Marvel Studios reserves the character for him in all future Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as long as the studio retains the rights.
  • The events of the film "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) take place after those depicted in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015).
  • Ruben Fleischer, Rob Letterman, and Rawson Marshall Thurber were considered as directors.
  • According to Norse mythology, Ragnar (Ragnarök) translates to "Twilight of the Gods." The myth tells of the destruction of all mankind and the universe, as well as the death of some key figures in Norse mythology, including Odin, Thor, Loki, and Heimdall.
  • To reprise his role as the mighty Thor, Chris Hemsworth had to follow a strict diet, visit the gym 6-7 times a week, and consume about 6000 calories a day. As a result, the actor gained about 10 kg of muscle mass, and his weight exceeded 90 kg.
  • This is the second time Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum have appeared on screen together since "Jurassic Park" (1993).
  • This is the second film with Hulk as the central character, featuring Thor in a second lead role, following «The Incredible Hulk Returns» (1988).
  • Director Taika Waititi wanted to include a cameo by Nova Corps member Rhomann Dey from «Guardians of the Galaxy» (2014).
  • The film was released in 2017 – the 55th anniversary of the first appearance of Thor (his first comic appeared in August 1962) and the Incredible Hulk (who debuted in May 1962), as well as the centennial of one of the creators of these characters, Jack Kirby.
  • Cate Blanchett accepted the offer to participate in the project at the urging of her children, who are fans of Marvel comics. One of her sons, Ignatius Martin Upton, even secured a cameo in the film.
  • The Marvel Studios Thor franchise is unique in that the music for each of its films was composed by different composers: Patrick Doyle worked on «Thor» (2011), Brian Tyler – «Thor: The Dark World» (2013), and Mark Mothersbaugh – «Thor: Ragnarok» (2017).
  • Stellan Skarsgård appeared in the previous two installments of the Thor franchise, alongside Sam Neill in "The Hunt for Red October" (1990).
  • Luke Hemsworth, brother of Chris Hemsworth, played the actor portraying Thor.
  • This is the first Thor film without Jane Foster and her team. Their absence angered many fans of the romantic storyline between Thor and Jane, and the comedic duo of Darcy and Erik Selvig.
  • In the comics, Valkyrie rides a winged horse named Aragorn. Aragorn is one of the main characters in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, in which Cate Blanchett (Hela) and Karl Urban (Skurge the Executioner) play his allies Galadriel and Éomer.
  • This is the third time Sam Neill and Samuel L. Jackson have appeared in the same cinematic universe, but their characters' paths have never crossed. Neill starred in "The Hunt for Red October" (1990), while Jackson was in the sequel "Patriot Games" (1992). Both actors also appeared in "Jurassic Park" (1993).
  • According to Scandinavian mythology, Hel (Cate Blanchett) is the daughter of Loki.
  • The film features three members of the superhero group "The Defenders", namely Valkyrie, Hulk, and Doctor Strange. Hulk and Doctor Strange were among the founders of the group.
  • Ruben Fleischer, Rob Letterman, and Rowson Marshall Thurber were considered as directors.
  • Initially, Sir Anthony Hopkins refused to reprise his role as Odin, but after reading the film's script, he changed his mind.
  • Before the sets of the science fiction action film 'Doctor Strange' (Scott Derrickson, 2016) were dismantled, the director of 'Thor: Ragnarok' Taika Waititi used them to film a scene specifically written and incorporated into the plot showing the meeting of Thor and Doctor Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch in Derrickson's film). It was decided that this scene would establish Doctor Strange as a character within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, and therefore it was shown during the post-credits sequence of Derrickson's film.
  • In portraying Korg, Taika Waititi (who also voiced him) drew inspiration from bouncers in Polynesian nightclubs in New Zealand. These are people of such immense size that they don't even need to be aggressive, and can therefore afford to be friendly and gentle when interacting with patrons.
  • According to Tom Hiddleston, the actor who played Loki, the knife-throwing trick occurred entirely by accident. The camera was still rolling, and he didn't want to just stand there doing nothing, so he tossed the knives up and caught them.
  • Originally, the meeting of the characters played by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and Cate Blanchett was intended to take place in New York, but director Taika Waititi ordered it to be reshot in fields in Norway. The scene in New York was initially filmed in Brisbane, Australia, and can be seen in the film's trailer.
  • At the very beginning of the project, rumors circulated that, like the film "Thor" (2011), "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) would be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Producer Kevin Feige consistently denied these rumors.
  • The events of the film "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) take place after the events depicted in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015).
  • According to Norse mythology, Ragnarök (Ragnarok) translates as "Twilight of the Gods." The myth tells of the destruction of all humankind and the universe, as well as the death of some key figures in Norse mythology, including Odin, Thor, Loki, and Heimdall.
