The film is based on Robb White's novel "Deathwatch" (1972).
The film was shot in Farmington, New Mexico, and its surroundings – in Shiprock.
After the shots of Maddocks firing near Ben's body to check if he is dead, a close-up shows Ben's face. Maddocks' departing figure is reflected in his eyes, although he actually shot him in the back of the head, and his reflection should not be visible.
An employee from the "Mercedes" company was specially brought in from Germany and lived with the film crew for 6 weeks, servicing the vehicle.
Jeremy Irvine gained muscle mass for the filming. Before this film, he worked with Jonathan Teplitzky on the war drama "Revenge" (2013), where he played a prisoner of war in a Japanese concentration camp during World War II. Before filming with Teplitzky, Irvine lost a significant amount of weight, consuming only a can of fish in brine per day. Therefore, training at the gym before filming "The Survival Game" with Jean-Baptiste Leonetti was not easy for him.
