The film begins with a quote from Franz Kafka (1883-1924): "The first sign of the beginning of knowledge is the desire to die" – from "The Octavo Notebooks".
A love scene between the characters, performed by Ginger Lynn Allen and Richard Brake, plays out against the backdrop of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s classic silent horror film *Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror* (1922). This is one of Rob Zombie’s favorite films.
