What's left behind the scenes

  • Clint Eastwood agreed to direct the crime drama "The Rookie" (1990) only in exchange for Warner Brothers' promise to allow him to film it his way, and Eastwood subsequently filmed "White Hunter Black Heart".
  • The film was in contention for the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. Clint Eastwood took a 5-day break from filming "The Rookie" to personally attend the screening of "White Hunter Black Heart" in Cannes. It is said that the delay cost him $1.5 million.
  • The speech of Clint Eastwood's character here differs from how his characters speak in other films. Eastwood specifically imitates the speech of John Huston, stretching the vowels in words.
  • Warner Brothers insisted on filming scenes on the ship The African Trader in a studio, but Clint Eastwood went against these wishes and filmed everything on location and amidst real rapids, even taking the helm himself during the filming of that scene.
