What's left behind the scenes
- Robin Wright dreamed of starring in this film back in 2004, when she was married to Sean Penn. She sparked her husband's and Javier Bardem's interest in the idea of the film. Unable to find sponsors, Wright left the project. Penn returned to it after his divorce from Wright. He took on directorial duties, and cast his then-girlfriend Charlize Theron in the role Wright had wanted to play.
- The musicians in the film were played by members of the Cape Town Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
