The film was screened in the non-competitive program of the Sundance Film Festival (a national American festival of independent cinema). The premiere took place on January 24, 2015. The film was enthusiastically received by critics.
Following its success at Sundance, the film was shown at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. All tickets for the screening were sold out.
Kirsten Dunst was initially planned to star in the film, but she had to decline due to commitments to other projects.
Adam Scott and Jason Mantzoukas had previously worked together on the series Parks and Recreation (2009), where they played Ben Wyatt and Denis Feinstein, respectively.
