Short description
A private eye investigates the apparent suicide of a fading porn star in 1970s Los Angeles and uncovers a conspiracy.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, "Goodfellas" was intended to be a series, but the pilot episode turned out rather lackluster, and the project's format was changed to a film.
  • The name of the porn star "Mysti Mountainz" was borrowed from one of the production companies involved in making the film "Goodfellas".
  • Chet Jack Kilmer, who played the role of the projectionist, is the son of actor Val Kilmer. Val Kilmer starred in Shane Black's black comedy "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005).
  • As with the promotion of Paul Thomas Anderson's comedy "Inherent Vice" (2014), "Warner Bros." released a trailer in the style of the 1970s, shot with typical image and sound quality of those years, and presenting "Kim Basinger on screen for the first time."
  • Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling began their acting careers as children. Both later dropped out of school for the sake of cinema and never studied acting formally.
  • Filming of 1970s Los Angeles took place in downtown Atlanta. Cars from those years, shown on the city streets, had their license plates changed to California ones, and one of them was repainted as a "Hollywood Taxi Co." taxi.
  • This is the first joint work of Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger since filming in Curtis Hanson's thriller "L.A. Confidential" (1997). It is the second joint work of Russell Crowe and Taye Simpkins after Paul Haggis's crime drama "Three Days to Escape" (2010).
  • This is the second joint work of Jack Kilmer and Margaret Qualley. The first was the 2013 drama "Palo Alto," directed by Gia Coppola.
  • Russell Crowe and Taye Simpkins starred together in the crime drama "Three Days to Escape" (Paul Haggis, 2010), where Crowe played Simpkins' father.
  • The red car with a white convertible top is a 1967 "Mustang" with a 4.7-liter engine.
  • Ty Simpkins played Harley Keener in Shane Black's "Iron Man 3" (2013).
  • Towards the end of the film, Christmas is shown. The depiction of Christmas is characteristic of all films directed by Shane Black.
  • The "even" sign at the gas station indicates license plates that are permitted to refuel on that day. This was practiced in the US in 1979, when cars with an even or odd sum of digits in their license plate were allowed to refuel on even and odd days of the month, respectively. For example, on April 3rd, a car with the license plate "ABC-827" could fill up. In some states, any car could refuel on the 31st of each month.
  • Russell Crowe plays a private investigator named Jackson Healy in the film. In the romantic comedy by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, "There's Something About Mary" (1998), Matt Dillon played a private investigator named Pat Healy.
  • The advertisement for March's detective agency in the phone book is a tribute from the filmmakers to the series "The Rockford Files" (1974-1980). It is an exact copy of the advertisement promoting the services of private investigator Jim Rockford.
  • During March's opening monologue, the composition "Bang Bang Kiss Kiss" plays in the background. In 2005, Shane Black directed the black comedy "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".
  • Like private detective Jim Rockford from the series "The Rockford Files" (1974-1980), Ryan Gosling's character keeps a gun in a cookie jar.
  • One of the guests at the party hosted by the porn film producer, dressed in a Pinocchio costume, says: "It's not my nose that's growing." "It's not his nose that's growing" was the slogan for a pornographic version of Pinocchio in the 1970s.
  • In the elevator, the same music plays as in the elevator in one episode of John Landis's comedic musical film "The Blues Brothers" (1980).
  • The mole on the character named John Boy is exactly the same as that of his namesake from the television series "The Waltons" (1971-1981).
  • When March discovers a corpse in the woods, a cigarette sticks to his lip – exactly like the character played by Dan Aykroyd in the hotel scene in Ivan Reitman's fantasy comedy "Ghostbusters" (1984).
  • The shot of Ryan Gosling sitting leaning against a tree next to Sid Shatuck's body is a tribute by the filmmakers to actor and comedian Lou Costello (1906-1959), who was often shown in close-up when something frightened him so much that he was initially unable to speak and then would shout his signature phrase, "Hey, Abbott!"
  • When Jackson, Holland, and Holly are stuck in traffic in a taxi after the shootout with John Boy in Holland's house, a black mini-van that hit Sinelicev is also stuck in the same traffic lane next to the taxi.
  • Immediately after the scene in the toilet stall, President of the United States Richard Nixon (1913-1994) can be recognized on the cover of March's magazine, and he will reappear in the film once more.
  • The scene in which Holland March chases mermaids in the pool is very reminiscent of an episode from Philip Kaufman's adventure drama "The Right Stuff" (1983), where Dick Slaten is in the pool and is observed by Gus Grissom and Gordon Cooper.
  • In one of the final scenes of the film, a canopy over the "Comedy Store" theater is visible in the background, where a film starring Tim Allen is being shown.
  • During the party at Sid's, during Healy's fight, Russell Crowe delivers a series of punches – exactly like the punches Maximus, also played by him, delivered to Commodus in the finale of Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" (2000).
  • The number of deaths in the film is around 20.
  • "Get Down On It" by Kool & The Gang is playing at the party. In reality, this song was released in 1981.
  • One of the songs heard during the party is "Escape" by Rupert Holmes. The film takes place in 1977, but Holmes only released this song in September 1979.
  • Initially, 'Goodfellas' was intended to be a series, however, the plot didn't develop particularly well, so the project's format was changed to a film.
