- The film company Warner Bros. Pictures began working on the film in 2010. In 2011, the role was offered to Denzel Washington. Filming was scheduled to begin in October of the same year, with Atlanta chosen as the location. Suddenly, Warner Bros. Pictures backed down, and the project was shelved for several years. Eventually, it attracted the interest of the independent company IM Global. Casting began in early 2014, and filming started in January 2015. By the time the film was released, director Billy Ray had celebrated his fifth anniversary with the project.
